On a sunny afternoon, a sage was passing through the garden where Tenali Ramakrishna was Playing with a group of boys. When the sage saw Ramakrishna, he was astonished by the brilliance of the boy’s appearance. He could see the brightness of the aura around the boy very clearly.
The sage thought that he was looking at an extraordinary person. Despite the peasant looks, the boy had greatness written all over his face. The sage could glimpse at the future of the boy with his divine vision. He thought that the boy needed the blessings of Goddess Kalika to become what he was detained to be.
The sage could foresee a problem there. The sage knew that Tenali Ramakrishna had no devotional bent of mind and rarely attend ‘Puja’ in his house. He also gathered through his divine vision that the boy never worshipped any God or Goddess. He thought it was a real challenge to make Ramakrishna seek the blessing of Goddess Kalika.
The sage could also see the courage and dare-devil nature of Tenali Ramakrishna. He understood that Ramakrishna loved challenges. So he decided to use these qualities to force Ramakrishna into the presence of Goddess Kalika.
Immediately the sage approached Ramakrishna and blessed him by raising his hand, “let the blessings of Goddess Kalika be showered on you”.
Ramakrishna looked into the face of the sage and laughed aloud. He aids defiantly, “ I don’t need the blessings of anyone. Why should I bow down to lifeless statues? Why should I believe that its blessing makes me happy?”
This response from Tenali Ramakrishna was already anticipated by the sage. So he told Ramakrishna Patiently, “You see my dear boy! Your words are a reflection of your ignorance. If you really understand the divine power of the Goddess, you will not only believe in her but also become her permanent devotee.
Let me teach you a mantra. If you sit before the statue of Goddess Kalika in her Temple and chant it systematically, she will be pleased and appear before you. Do it with devotion and determination, and you will indeed receive her blessings”-
And then he imparted the mantra to Ramakrishna. Ramakrishna learnt and memorised the mantra at the first rendering itself. But he was still doubtful and hesitant. He was reluctant to go to the Temple of Goddess Kalika.
But the great sage knew how to induce Rama Krishna to go the Temple and chant the mantra before the Goddess. So he looked into the eyes of Rama Krishna and told him challengingly. “There is one more thing that you should remember. When Goddess Kalika appears in person, no human being can withstand the ferocity of her looks and demonic appearance. If you feel that you will not die with fear when you see her burning eyes and hanging tongue with dripping blood, go ahead and chat the mantra in her presence.
So it is up to you now. This is not for chicken-hearted fellows.” -
“I am not timid. I shall prove my courage”, Tenali Ramakrishna said with conviction.
Then Rama Krishna took leave of the sage and walked into the forest where the Temple of Kalika was located.
The sage smiled contentedly and went on his way, knowing that he had fulfilled his mission.
